Understanding the Past
I first met My Hạnh in 2018. She is mixed-race and grew up believing her father was an Australian soldier. Unlike thousands of other mixed-race children who were adopted overseas, My Hạnh remained in Vietnam. Her life has been one of relentless hardship.

She lives in a small, crumbling room that she rents with what little she earns from collecting recycling. A recent stroke has left her with limited use of one arm and hand. Tragically, her husband has passed away. Her adult son works but earns too little to support her. Her daughter ran away, leaving behind her baby. Now, despite barely being able to care for herself, My Hạnh is raising her six-year-old granddaughter.
Every time I visit her, I’m reminded that my life could easily have looked like hers had I been left behind, too.
The Weight of Uncertainty
Despite everything she has endured, one pain has followed her throughout her life: not knowing who her father was. This uncertainty has cast a long shadow over her existence. Recently, she did a DNA test and matched with a relative. Through the incredible work of Kerri Lyn from UmeDNA, she finally learned the truth: her father was an American soldier.

Tragically, he passed away in 1973, and no close family members have yet been found. My Hạnh may never know her paternal family. However, today, she has closure and a photo of him. For someone who has carried this longing her entire life, that means everything.
The Power of Connection
Finding out about her father has been a significant turning point for My Hạnh. It has provided her with a sense of identity and belonging that she longed for. The journey to uncover her roots has been filled with challenges, but it has also been a path to healing.
The emotional weight of her story resonates deeply with many. It highlights the importance of family connections and the impact of knowing one's heritage. For My Hạnh, the discovery of her father's identity has brought a sense of peace.
A Community of Support
